Important Notice~

 High school seniors considering attending college or trade school this fall should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA, as soon as possible.

The FAFSA is the form students complete to determine if they qualify for federal and state grants and to apply for loans. Students should submit the FAFSA even if they feel it is unlikely they will qualify for aid. Many colleges use information from the FAFSA to determine the distribution of grants and scholarships administered by the school.

The FAFSA asks for information about income, assets and expenses. A formula set by Congress is used to determine the student’s eligibility for federal and state aid. If the student is considered dependent under federal guidelines, both the student and the parents must provide financial information. Nearly all students going directly to college from high school are considered dependent.

Due to the current economic downturn, an increase in college enrollment is anticipated, making it more important than ever to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1. Some financial aid programs have limited money and provide funds on a first-come, first-served basis to qualified students.

For faster feedback, KHEAA recommends that students submit the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, although they may also be mailed to the FAFSA processor.

To learn how to plan and prepare for higher education, visit www.GoHigherKY.org. For more information about Kentucky scholarships and grants, visit www.kheaa.com; write KHEAA, P.O. Box 798, Frankfort, KY 40602-0798; or call (800) 928-8926, extension 6-7372.

Morehead State University Open House

Open House events will be an excellent opportunity for students and families to discover why Morehead State University (MSU) has been named one of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News and World Report for the sixth year running.

University representatives will be available to meet students and their families, answer questions, lead campus tours and share information concerning college life.

“Our goal is to make it convenient to get answers to questions about starting college by bringing deans, department chairs and faculty from our academic programs, as well as staff from admissions, financial aid, housing and many more services together in one place,” said Holly Pollock, assistant director of enrollment services. “Families will hear success stories about our graduates and learn some statistics that demonstrate the academic quality offered at MSU.”

On one such measure of success, MSU graduates are consistently accepted into professional schools, including medical, dental and pharmacy programs, at rates well above state and national averages.

Students and families are encouraged to register for the Open House. Open House events are free!  To learn more about this event or to complete an online registration card, you may visit www.moreheadstate.edu/openhouse.

Additional information is available by calling enrollment services at (606) 783-2000 or (800) 585-6781.

Nontraditional Courses

Many of your students may take courses online or through a credit recovery program.  Here is what you need to know about how those courses work with NCAA eligibility.

1.                 Follow your high school’s policy.  Make sure you treat your student-athletes in the same manner in which you treat your students.

2.                Place the course on your high school transcript and make sure it has a designation that identifies it as credit recovery or distance learning course.

3.            Ensure academic soundness.  Many courses may not meet NCAA requirements if they are taught below the regular academic level, are abbreviated in nature or are completed in a condensed timeframe.

Test Scores

Please advise your students to send their test scores to the NCAA Eligibility Center by entering the code “9999” as one of their free test-score recipients in the box provided when registering for the SAT or ACT.  If your student-athletes forget to use the “9999” code, the student-athlete will need to contact the SAT or ACT directly to have the scores sent officially by the testing agency.  The Eligibility Center must receive official scores directly from the testing agency in order to certify the student-athlete’s initial eligibility.  All test scores are required to be sent.  This will aid in using the best scores from each exam in the certification of your student-athletes.

The Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete is Available

The 2009-10 Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete is now available.  The Guide provides important information and key steps for high school student-athletes and parents as they begin the initial-eligibility process.  The Guide and other informational materials can be found on the Eligibility Center Web site.  To access them, follow the steps below.

·                     Log onto www.eligibilitycenter.org.

·                     Click on “Resources” at the top of the screen.

·                     Click on “U.S. Students” in the notebook.

·                     Click on “Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete."

The Guide is also available for purchase at NCAApublications.com.

Important Information for Your Juniors

Encourage your college-bound student-athletes that plan on participating in college athletics to register with the Eligibility Center.  This can be done on the Eligibility Center's Web site, www.eligibilitycenter.org.  Early registration helps student-athletes avoid pitfalls that could delay their academic or amateur certification.

Information Regarding Your Seniors

Please send your student-athletes’ six-semester transcripts to the Eligibility Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Also, please remember that the Eligibility Center cannot accept faxed transcripts.  Official transcripts can be sent to the address below.

New Registration Web Site

Earlier this summer, the NCAA Eligibility Center unveiled a new registration Web site for college-bound student-athletes planning to enroll in college fall 2010 and later.  The new Web address is www.eligibilitycenter.org.  The Eligibility Center feels that this new environment will aid you in easily accessing the vital information needed to assist your student-athletes and parents with the registration and academic and amateurism certification processes.  As members of the high school community, you will be able to access your information from the “For High Schools” link.  The process of submitting your school's core courses online will remain the same.

Student-athletes that have registered prior to the launch of the new Web site will be required to log into their current account (www.ncaaclearinghouse.net).  The student will be asked to verify his or her e-mail address and select a new password.  The information that the student has previously submitted will carry over to the new account.  However, the student will need to answer additional questions to bring his or her account current.  Once the student has completed the update of his or her account, all information will be accessed and maintained at www.eligibilitycenter.org.  The student will no longer need to go to the old Web site.

If you know of students who registered in the previous system, or those student-athletes that have asked you to send a six-semester transcript, please inform them of this new process.  Step-by-step instructions for students are provided below.

Instructions for College-Bound Student-Athletes Who Have Already Registered

College-bound student-athlete’s who have registered with the Eligibility Center under the old Web site (http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/) and plan to enroll in college fall 2010 or later will need to have their information transferred to the new Web site (www.eligibilitycenter.org).  In order to start this process, please have the college-bound student-athlete follow the steps below:

1.        Direct the student-athlete to www.eligibilitycenter.org and to click on the spring 2010 or before link (this will re-direct him or her back to the old Web site);

2.        Instruct the student-athlete to log in using his or her NCAA ID or SSN and PIN;

3.        The next page will give the student-athlete instructions to start the transfer process:

a.   Validate the e-mail address the student-athlete wants the Eligibility Center to use;

b.   Log in to his or her e-mail account and click the link in the e-mail he or she received and create an account with the Eligibility Center;

c.   Log in to his or her new account on the new Web site; and

d.   Finish the incomplete sections of his or her "My Planner" information.

Should you have any questions concerning the registration of your college-bound student-athletes or locating Eligibility Center information, please refer to the high school resource page, which can be accessed by clicking on "For High Schools" and then logging in as a high school administrator.

Transcript Release Forms

With the launch of the Eligibility Center’s new registration Web site, www.eligibilitycenter.org, the Eligibility Center no longer provides Transcript Release forms to the student to print off and provide to the high school.  This form was generated as a courtesy for high schools that may have required a Transcript Release form.  If your high school or district office requires your students to sign a form to release transcripts, use your school or district form.  Remember, no specific release is required by the Eligibility Center.  You can look up your school’s list of registrants on the Eligibility Center Web site.  Simply log in under "High School Administration" and follow the prompts.  The Eligibility Center also mails a copy of this list to you prior to graduation as a reminder to send final transcripts.

Have You Updated Your Core Courses for the 2009-10 Academic Year?

Now is the time to add new courses, submit any courses that have changed names and/or delete courses you no longer teach.  Your college-bound student-athletes will need you to update your school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses.  This process is exclusively electronic.  To update your information:

1.  Log onto www.eligibilitycenter.org;

2.  Select the "For High Schools" link at the top of the page;

3.  Enter your high school's six-digit CEEB code and five-digit PIN on the login page; and

4.  Follow the prompts at the center of the screen to update your NCAA List of Approved Core Courses.

Once the NCAA Eligibility Center has reviewed and made decisions on the high school’s submissions, the Eligibility Center will send an e-mail to your high school.  Please make sure that your e-mail address is updated.
